Description: 14K Gold Taille d'Epargne Handkerchief Clip w/Ring & Chain Victorian Really Rare Offered is this rare Victorian handkerchief clip made of 14K yellow gold and decorated in taille d'epargne black enamel suspended from a gold chain attached to a size 7½ plain gold band. The gold has been acid tested to assure purity, as it is not marked. The clip itself measures 1 3/4” long by 5/8” by 7/16”, the chain 2 1/4” long. The weight is 5.31 grams.This type of clip was used by a lady when dancing or perhaps traveling in order to keep her handkerchief available without carrying a purse in her hand. Or perhaps given to a widow at her time of mourning?It operates by sliding the ring down the shaft of the holder which allows the metal bands to open so that the hanky can be clutched in the jaws of the clip. Once in the clip you just slide the ring back up the shaft to close and secure the handkerchief. Larger and heavier versions of this were used to secure the train of a formal gown to one's wrist or hand while dancing, but this one is definitely for a handkerchief. The taille d'epargne enameling on the clip is of leaves and delicate fretwork design. This Victorian period item was perhaps the “something new” for a bride given to her by her family for her wedding day. It dates from the 1860-80 time period when this type of enameling work was hugely popular.It is a remnant of the Victorian era and a wonderful piece of social history from a time when a lady would never be without her handkerchief!
