It was struck at the Nagybanya, now in Romania, mint in 1626 during the reign of Prince Gabriel Bethlen who ruled from 1613 until 1629. Although Transylvania was essentially a vassal state of the “Ottoman Empire” for the majority of the 16th and 17th centuries, it was ruled by Hungarian princes and had a significant degree of autonomy. Gabriel Bethlen, supported by the Ottomans, led his Calvinist (Protestant) Principality against the Habsburgs of the “Holy Roman Empire” and their Catholic allies. Under Bethlen’s rule, Transylvania had its “Golden Age”. He stopped all the efforts of the Emperor to oppress his subjects, and won a reputation abroad for championing the Protestant cause. Reverse: PAR • REG • HVN • D • O • SIC • CO • OP • R • DVX • Lord of some parts of Hungary, Count of the Székelys and Duke of Opole and Racibórz. • 1626 • Radiant Madonna and Child. The Madonna and Child which is so prevalent on the coinage of Hungary was first placed there by Matthias Corvinus 1458 – 1490. The Coin: A very nice specimen, for a hand struck coin. At 2.3 grams and 25 millimeters it is quite thin, which explains some of the weak areas. It saw some hands but still has most of the detail. Fully original, it has not been cleaned.
