Description: On offer: an original (i.e. not a later reproduction) antique print "Berkshire". The print has early outline colour. DATE PRINTED: c.1790 from a plate first engraved in 1694. SIZE: The printed area of the map, including titles, is approximately 15 x 12.5 cm, 6 x 5 inches (small) plus margins. Below the view and continued on the back is a description of the county. The sheet is approximately 18 x 26.5 cm , 7.25 x 10.5 inches.ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Published by Samuel Hooper, Ludgate Hill, London. These maps were drawn by John Seller and were first published in 1694. The title and scale were updated when the maps were used in this publication but otherwise the maps remained as issued.PROVENANCE: This print was published in "The Antiquities of England and Wales", by Francis Grose. Francis Grose (1731–1791) was an antiquary and lexicographer, of Swiss extraction. He published Antiquities of England and Wales (1773–87), which was well received, and thereafter, in 1789, set out on an antiquarian tour through Scotland, the fruit of which was Antiquity of Scotland (1789–91). He afterwards undertook a similar expedition to Ireland, but died suddenly at Dublin TYPE: Antique copper plate engraving printed on laid paper.
