Description: This Presidential medal, struck by the United States Mint in Philadelphia, was struck using the Type 2 reverse die. As far as 20th century strikes go, this reverse die is far less common than the Type 1 reverse die. I've included a picture that compares the two. The easiest differentiator is the pointer finger on the right hand. On the Type 2 reverse, it points to the "R" in "FRIENDSHIP"; it points to the "F" on the Type 1 reverse. Additionally, this piece likely dates to the 1920's or early 1930's, based on the use of the Type 2 die and many other characteristics including: a darker surface finish, a glossier surface finish, sharper design details, and the appearance of the tapered lathe lines on the rims and edges. Later strikes often have a sandblasted appearance, are lighter in color, have less defined details, and the results of the lathe are much different. The comparison photo that I've included with this listing also illustrates these differences. Most US Mint medals, in my opinion, are generally underappreciated for their beauty, historical interest, and rarity; Presidential List medals struck with the Type 2 reverse die are no different. Most collectors may try to achieve completion within the US Mint medal series by acquiring one medal of each President or one of each US Mint List number, but an advanced collector will acquire these major varieties as well or specialize in them solely.
