Originated as a Western Christian feast day honoring one or two early Christian martyrs named Saint Valentine and is recognized as a significant cultural, religious, and commercial celebration of romance and love in many regions of the world).Fine cameo-embossed paper-lace Valentine's Day card, from sister to brother, c1832. An original embossed paper lace, die-cut Valentine's card. Silk oval at top with printed lettering. Pink tissue paper background leaf. Leaf of wove paper carrying a manuscript message, 'To P. Rogers with a sister's fondest love'. The card laid down to backing paper (clipped leaf from an album). Size: (card, excluding the backing paper) 9.3cm x 6.8cm.Very Good condition. Very light marking. A nice example. The embossed paper lace front cover is designed around a cameo of a well-dressed man and a woman reading a book, both seated at a table.
