The priority for the U.S. edition of this work is impossible to establish, as there was a race between this Harper & Brothers publication and two newspaper format editions, the three producers racing to be the first to publish this work in the U.S.. It is still unknown today which of these U.S. editions was issued first.Four pages of adverts to the rear, dated November 2nd 1842.'American Notes' is Dickens' travelogue, detailing his 1842 trip to North America. This work is noted for its influential chapter on slavery, as it stirred hatred towards British abolitionists. It was also an inspiration to Longfellow, who wrote many poems on slavery. Dickens was also highly critical of American customs, providing a fascinating insight into Victorian America by a popular and eminent author of the time.From the library of A. P. Watt & A. S. Externally, generally smart, with some light rubbing to the boards and spine. Minor bumping to the extremities. Spine is a little faded. A small amount of lifting to the head of the spine. Front hinge is starting but firm. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto of the front endpaper and recto of the front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and spotted.
