Historical Collections of Louisiana [and Florida for Vol.s 6 & 7) . . . all 7 Volumes are present.Part 1: New York, 1846; Part 2, Philadelphia 1850 (with folding map); Part 3, New York: 1851; [Part 4 - this being the separately but simultaneously issued Discovery & Expiration of the Mississippi Valley by Shea - in all ways except for wording of the title page, identical to Part 4 as issued) with folding map; Part 5, New York: 1853 with engraved portrait of Bienville as frontispiece; [Part 6] New Series with newer title: Historical Collections of Louisiana and Florida, New Series, New York 1869; [Part 7] “Second Series” Historical Collections of Louisiana & Florida, New York: 1875, ALL ARE FIRST EDITIONS Contains an amazing amount of material concerning Louisiana and West Florida AND the territory that would become Alabama and Mississippi with "contributions" from La Salle, Penicaut, Joutel, Hennepin, Marquette and Joliet, De Soto, Daniel Coxe, La Harpe, Charlevoix, and many more. "This collection is remarkable for the immense amount of material relating to the aborigines of America, being almost wholly composed of memoirs and narratives, in the language of the original explorers" - Field This is the first collected publication, in English, of some of the most important narratives of the early deep South and the Gulf Coast region. A monumental work, issued by 7 different major publishing houses over a period of 30 years (Part 4 by Shea (but edited by French and with French’s name & original title on the spine) was issued separately but simultaneously (like mine) in addition to being issued as a volume in the set. They are absolutely identical except for slightly different wording of the title page and they were issued simultaneously.)Conditions: Part 1: front pastedown contains the private owner bookplate of A. Johanne White (?) & shows some very modest evidence of another bookplate having been removed. Else fine with very bright gilt on the backstrip. Part 2: Folding map is fine (what looks like 3 vertical columns of foxing is added by my camera - you won’t see those on the actual map); carefully but amateurishly rebacked with black tape; front pastedown contains the private owner bookplate of A. Johanne White (?); else Good. (Map is fine). Part 3: Gilt rather faded on backstrip but one can barely read it; backstrip itself is fine; front pastedown contains the private owner bookplate of A. Johanne White (?); otherwise VERY GOOD [Part 4]: Large folding map APPROXIMATELY 15 inches wide by 19 inches deep(see photo) is fine (what appears to be foxing at the folds is added by my camera - it will not be on the map you receive); ⅛ inch chipping at both top & bottom of backstrip; but gilt lettering on backstrip is bright & easily readable; very modest chipping to cloth boards; front pastedown contains the private owner bookplate of A. Johanne White (?) and also shows modest evidence of another bookplate having been removed; else VERY GOOD Part 5: (with engraved portrait of Bienville as frontispiece); front pastedown contains the private owner bookplate of A. Johanne White (?) and also shows modest evidence of another bookplate having been removed; gilt lettering very bright on the backstrip. Fine. New Series [i.e., “Part 6”]: has the small but attractive bookplate of noted Americana collector and University of Michigan Philanthropist William L. Clements* (see below) on the front pastedown. (The front endpaper also has a period pencil notation about the book’s being a duplicate). The front pastedown also has another private owner’s bookplate - somewhat later than the Clements’ bookplate. Backstrip and front outer hinge (but holding well) are moderately chipped. Good. Second Series [i.e., “Part 7”]: Has 2 bookplates on front pastedown: Hoffman Library Frank Richmond Foundation and Kenyon College Library; about ⅛ inch chipping at both top & bottom of backstrip, else VERY GOOD There is no other complete set of all 7 volumes listed online anywhere. * By the 1890s, Clements started collecting rare books and works of early Americana. Fortunately, Clements was able to make many of his purchases in the “golden age” for collectors as the decades of the 1880s through the 1920s saw the breakup of aristocratic British estates which contained many great libraries. In the United States many large private libraries were also sold which allowed Clements to make a series of major purchases. Clements concentrated on two periods of early American history—the colonization of America from the 15th through the 17th centuries and the late 18th century colonial period and revolutionary America. Among some of his notable purchases were Christopher Columbus's letters and reports to the king and queen of Spain describing the first voyage to discover a world that did not then exist on any map. He also purchased John Smith's "True Relation of Virginia," one of the six copies of Thomas Hariot’’s "A Briefe and True Report of Virginia of 1588," and also Jefferson's notes on the State J. Kevin Graffagnino assessed Clements' book collecting: "William L. Clements stands as one of the great Americana collectors of his or any other generation.” As of 15 Oct. 2024, I could find NO OTHER COMPLETE ORIGINAL SET FOR SALE ONLINE ANYWHERE! ********************************************** FREE SHIPPING VIA BOXED & CAREFULLY PACKAGED PRIORITY MAIL, I always ship twice a week within 3 business days (frequently more often than that) of your payment so there is very little turn around time.PLACING A BID IS THE ETHICAL EQUIVALENT OF ACCEPTING THESE TERMS.
