Description: The Amaranth; or, Token of Remembrance. A Christmas and New Year's Gift for MDCCCXLVII. Boston: Phillips & Sampson, 1847, First volume, bold gothic design, red leather, gilt deco. Copyright 1846, 324 pp, 7 plates, 7 x 4.5", 12mo. In fair condition. Red leather boards are scuffed at edges & bumped/worn at corners. Head and tail of spine chipped - binding exposed. Front hinge split at both head and tail - fragile. Gilt lettering and deco bright and clean with very little soiling. All edges gilt. Front gutter split at tail. Marginalia on front end-page, along with blind stamp - "From Bradley's". Tissue guard in between frontispiece and engraved title page is detached & chipped at edges with light off-setting. Frontispiece is loose at tail, and chipped at fore-edge. Toning and foxing throughout text-block, with some instances of finger-soiling and age-staining. Binding is intact. Please see photos. This is a first volume of "The Amaranth" Gift book series - notable, in part, because it spawned dozens of reissues, in particular, "The Garland, or, Token of Friendship," and "The Keepsake of Friendship, a Christmas and New Year's Annual." This volume contains several articles drawn from English annuals, but the preface is careful to point out that all engravings were undertaken by American artists. Beautiful binding & intricate gilt detailing. All plates present - a complete work. COLI1847AFGB11/23 - HK936
