Description: A flying machine at Hoboken! London Journal, 1865 This is an issue of The London Journal, dated Aug. 12, 1865. It measures 9x12 inches in size and is 16 pages long. It is in excellent condition. Unlike many surviving publications from the Civil War era, it was never enclosed in a bound volume, so it remains in its exact original format. The London Journals subheading describes it as The Weekly Record of Literature, Science and Art. It primarily featured serialized fiction, and such stories take up about 3/4ths of this issue. However, among its news of the day, is a short item in the papers SCIENCE column, which is introduced with a small title of: FLYING MACHINE. This brief report details the construction of a prospective airplane. It is an interesting look at an experiment in early aviation. The article says, in its entirety: A work is now proceeding at (Hoboken, New Jersey, U.S.), under direction of the Government, which excites attention, from its curiosity as well as scientific interest. It is the construction of a flying machine which is intended to be independent of the winds for its propulsion. The propelling power is gained by the rapid revolution of large spiral fans, just as a propeller steamship is urged through the water by the screw. The Government was induced to enter a field which has hitherto been occupied chiefly by enthusiasts, through the representation of the late lamented General O. M. Mitchell. He mounted a fan upon a vertical pole and experimentally determined what size of blades, and what speed of revolution, were necessary to raise a six-ton load, which is to be the weight of the projected machine. It is canoe-shaped, and built of copper, with iron ribs. An engine is placed in the centre with sufficient power to work a screw fan with twenty-foot blades. There are four of these fans connected with the engineone below, one above the canoe, and one at each end. The upper and lower fans are worked together to produce an ascent, and the terminal fans are made to revolve together, or separately, in the same direction, or in opposite directions for the purpose of propelling craft horizontally. _gsrx_vers_1680 (GS 9.8.3 (1680))
