Description: Hutchinson soda bottle from J.G. Byars of North Hoosick, New York, circa 1880s. The light aqua colored bottle has the words J.G. Byars, 1882, No. Hoosick, N.Y., embossed on the front in a circle. The words This Bottle Not to Be Sold are embossed on the back near the bottom. There is a C in a diamond on the bottom. There are two mold lines running from the bottom to the neck. This bottle was not well made—must have been a Monday morning! There are two globs of glass inside the back of the bottle with a line in the glass running diagonally from one to the others. If you look inside, you can see these globs sticking out from back about 1/8th of an inch. There is a lesser glob inside the mold line on the left side. Born in Scotland, James G. Byars (1839-1916) came to the U.S. with his wife and son around 1865 and, after living briefly in Vermont, settled in Rensselaer County about 1869. He was living in Hoosick with his wife and five children by 1875. In 1880, James G. Byars, Sr., gave his occupation as Soda Manufacturer. Charles G. Hutchinson patented this type of bottle with a built in stopper in 1879 and it became popular very quickly with soda bottlers. It was phased out in the 1910s. The bottle is in good condition with no cracks or chips but with light to modetate wear and soiling. There’s a bruise on the heel with some roughness. I suspect the bottle was dug many years ago. A very nice Hoosick NY hutch soda bottle!
