Description: Uncommon, complete issue of Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine for May 1882 is in very good condition, deftly removed by me from an old damaged bound volume of the monthly. 137 pages. Some highlights I find include: Part II of Margaret Oliphant's new serial novel, The Ladies Lindores. The novel was to be serialized in 14 issues of the magazine. The indefatigable Mrs. Oliphant also pens in this number a 15 page essay following the publication of American historian Henry Adams's now famous volume on Democracy, which had finally found its way to England and Scotland via a copy of the American Henry Holt edition of 1880. James G. Bertram's longer article (15 pages) on "Pisciculture: Its Progress and Utility" (fish farming). The notable London Times art critic J. Beavington Atkinson on "The State of Art in England." 13 pages. British traveler Constance F. Gordon Cumming contributes an article on Japanese life, "Across the Yellow Sea." 11 pages. The youthful English critic and essayist Violet Paget (later taking the pen name of "Vernon Lee") contributes an 18 page essay of some interest headed "Mozart: A Study of Artistic Nationality." Some author identifications above are drawn from the Wellesley Index, I, 157.
