Description: Well, here we have just a pristine, incredibly well struck Morgan 1885-S graded by PCGS in MS-65 and holdered in a classic OGH. This coin is virtually flawless with a nearly blast white obverse, full cartwheel luster, frosty Liberty and a slight hint of champagne toning on the reverse. The center reverse (eagle's breast) is fully struck, which is exceedingly rare for this issue. We're going to go out on the proverbial limb here and opine that this is a significantly undergraded coin. We recommend that you compare it against any MS66, or even a 66+. This is a monster coin and the OGH is really a bonus. No less an expert than Q. David Bowers himself had this to say about this issue in his epic reference resource, Silver Dollars & Trade Dollars of the United States: A Complete Encyclopedia (Wolfeboro, NH: Bowers and Merena Galleries, Inc., 1993): "The typical Mint State 1885-S dollar is frosty and has many bagmarks. Most are average to below average strikes, with weakly defined details at the center of the obverse and, especially, on the eagle's breast on the reverse. Most Uncirculated pieces are in lower grades such as MS-60 through 62 or 63. MS-64 specimens are on the scarce side; probably about 4,000 to 8,000 survive. In the context of Morgan dollars, MS-65 coins are rare, and only about 1,000 to 2,000 exist...Fully struck coins in higher levels can be found with patience and are worth a strong premium over typical market prices. Cherrypicking for quality is advised." This is that cherry picked coin, with fully struck devices, virtually flawless fields and one that is, consequently, "worth a strong premium over typical market prices", especially since, at least in our opinion, this OGH beauty is significantly undergraded. We leave you each to form your own opinion in that regard. Noticeably absent from this coin are the obverse bagmarks and reverse chatter that plague this issue. PCGS 669/80. As always, we are happy to answer any questions and to provide additional photos, as necessary. All the best from Big Sky!
