Description: TO SEE MY MANY OTHER BIRMINGHAM ALABAMA COLLECTIBLES, PLEASE CLICK ON my Ebay store link above ("Seller's Other Items") and then do a search for "Birmingham" +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ FREE SHIPPING - AS USUAL JEFFERSON COUNTY AND BIRMINGHAM ALABAMA - HISTORICAL AND BIOGRAPHICAL [written largely by Henry McCalley, B. E. Grace, A. O. Lane, and John Witherspoon DuBose - who also edited the book] Birmingham, Alabama: Published by Teeple & Smith and printed by Caldwell Printing Company, 1887; with 595 pages, bound in original 3/4 leather binding as issued. Finished size of the book is 8 inches by 10 1/2 inches; opens up to 16 by 10 1/2 inches for perusal or reading. {But if you want to read it, I suggest buying one of the cheap reprints for that purpose while putting this rare original on the shelf :-} Book was written & published when Birmingham was only 16 years old but there's a lot about pre-Birmingham Elyton as well. The volume contains a wealth of information: biographies of most all of the early settlers; a sketch of the coal & iron mining concerns in the Birmingham area; historical sketches of almost all important early businesses; sketches of the bench and bar; a beat historical sketch of the medical profession in the new city of Birmingham; sketch of the historic churches and railroads; etc. As a great added "plus," this book was from the library of (and is so signed - in the year of publication! - by) noted Birmingham realtor & developer, Robert Jemison, the original "Birmingham Bob of Rainbow Glen." (Get a reprint of that book if you want to see how much a man could HATE Robert Jemison!) 3/4 leather binding scuffed a bit, interior is nice, tight & clean. ALL engraved plates are present & accounted for. (I collated the entire book) - 1 or 2 of them are often missing from this volume but all are present here and in their proper place in the pagination. Withal, VERY GOOD No other copy of this original on eBay as of 17 Dec., 2024 __________________________________________________________________________________ (the fine print ...
