Description: This card was issued by the NEW YORK RECORDER newspaper, as a souvenir supplement given away with the Sunday edition of the paper. The series is entitled “Ruler and Flag ” and is listed as series M27 Type 5 Burdicks American Card Catalogue (listed in the Periodical Issues section of the ACC). I have not been able to find a date of issue in any guide that I am aware of but most of the leaders I have seen from this series where in power from the late 1880’s to the mid 1890’s, so I speculate this was issued in the 1890’s. I am unsure how many are in the set but I have seen 18 different over the years. The fronts also feature a serial number. I am unsure what that number represents, but again different numbers have been printed on all of the others I have seen over the years as well. As the title indicates the card features a striking illustration of Czar Alexander III of Russia. Here is some information I found about him on the internet: Alexander III (Russian: Александр III Александрович Романов, romanized: Aleksandr III Aleksandrovich Romanov; 10 March 1845 – 1 November 1894) was Emperor of Russia, King of Congress Poland and Grand Duke of Finland from 13 March 1881 until his death in 1894. He was highly reactionary in domestic affairs and reversed some of the liberal reforms of his father, Alexander II, a policy of "counter-reforms" (Russian: контрреформы). Under the influence of Konstantin Pobedonostsev (1827–1907), he acted to maximize his autocratic powers. During his reign, Russia fought no major wars, and he came to be known as The Peacemaker (Russian: Миротворец, romanized: Mirotvorets, IPA: [mʲɪrɐˈtvorʲɪt͡s]), with the laudatory title of Tsar’-Mirotvorets enduring into 21st century historiography. His major foreign policy achievement was the Franco-Russian Alliance, a major shift in international relations that eventually embroiled Russia in World War I. His political legacy represented a direct challenge to the European cultural order set forth by German statesman Otto von Bismarck, intermingling Russian influences with the shifting balances of power. The lithography is exceptional and rivals that of any of the Tobacco Card sets issued around the same time period. The backs were issued blank. The Card measures 8 ½ inches by 6 inches approximately. The card does have some areas of discoloration to teh back. The card is free from major creases with relatively nice corners and strong color I think this rare card displays well and would make a great addition to any advanced “type” card collection, or would look great matted and framed for those of Russian Heritage I have scanned the front and back of the card fairly large so you can determine the condition for yourself I will be trying to list several EARLY TRADE & TYPE CARDS over the next few days (spread across different categories), including one or two that are unrecorded in any guide, that were put given away with Tobacco, Cigarettes , Caramel, Candy, Gum, Chocolate, Bread Coffee Tea Cereal and other products, covering such diverse subjects as Native American Indians , Baseball , Football, Boy Scouts, Ice Hockey, Golf, Presidents of the United States, NCAA and IVY League Colleges and Universities, Dog Breeds, Circus themes and many more.
