It was the occasion of the enlistment of 435 young men into the Mississippi State Armed Forces. At Appomattox four years later, 15 of these men were paroled. The balance were killed, wounded, captured or missing. The names of all these men, by category, can be found at the rear section of this book… John Winstead was born on August 27, 1842, in Yazoo County, Mississippi. His father was Samuel Winstead, Sr., who was born in Tennessee. We know nothing further about his origin is despite having researched the matter for over 60 years. Samuel Winstead Sr., Was born about 1819 and he first appeared in Yazoo County about 1837. And it was here that he met and married the mother of his children Frances Ann Smith, born in 1820 North Carolina. Additional geological material can be found at the end of this narrative. The two other soldiers that are covered by this account, brothers of John Winstead. They were Samuel James Winstead, born October 20, 1844 and Charles Marshall Winstead, born April 9, 1847.
