BiographySon of the engraver Joseph Eugène Dubois and Uranie Virginie Béthune, Alphée Dubois married Rose Marie Catherine Novelli in 1860 in Rome . He is the father of Henri Alfred Auguste Dubois (1859-1943) who also became a medallist and sculptor, and of Virginie Dubois, mother-in-law of the perfumer François Coty .Alphée Dubois was a student of Francisque Duret and Jacques-Jean Barre at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris . He won the first Grand Prix de Rome in medal and fine stone engraving in 1855 1 on the theme Warrior dying on the altar of the fatherland . He studied models from Antiquity and perfected the practice of his art at the Villa Medici in Rome from 1855 to 1860.After his fruitful stay full of encounters and precious discoveries, he successively executed two medals: Pope Pius IX blessing the Imperial Prince , and The Reception of the Siamese Ambassadors of Fontainebleau , and received numerous official commissions from the Fine Arts department.In 1865 he engraved the portraits of Napoleon III and Empress Eugenie on a sardonix .Alphée Dubois exhibited in various Salons 2 and obtained medals in 1868 and 1869, and a silver medal in 1889.He was named a knight of the Legion of Honor by decree ofDecember 30, 18823 .In 1900 , he was curator of the Museum of Fine Arts and Archaeology in Besançon .He was a member of the jury and hors-competition at the 1900 World's Fair .He is also responsible for numerous sculptures, including the bas-relief Industry and Commerce decorating the pediment of the Provosts' Hall of the Paris City Hall , and medallion portraits of personalities.At the end of his life, Alphée Dubois lived at 9 rue Chef-de-Ville in Clamart 4 , where he is buried in the communal cemetery, 26 rue du Bois-Tardieu. His tomb is decorated with one of his works, Les Bergers d'Arcadie , a plaque after Nicolas Poussin , with the inscription: " Et Ament Meminisse Periti " ( "Let those who know, remember" ).
