Description: Presented is a superb quality English sterling silver inkwell stand, or standish. This piece dates to 1916 and was made by Crichton. The set consists of a heavy sterling silver tray, with two inkwells and a sander. The two inkwells have an interior glass liner. The sander has a little hidden compartment in the bottom, perhaps for stamps or whatever else you like. The set is very well made, with particularly clever construction for the inkwells, so that the glass liners seat securely into a spot on the inside and the lid holds the glass securely in place. The lid of the sander is decoratively pierced with an ornate, foliate design. The lids of the inkwells have a hole in the center for dipping into the ink, with smaller holes arrayed around the side, perhaps for holding pens? The stand is done in a much older style, emulating simple, elegant Queen Anne pieces from the late 1600s into the first quarter of the 1700s. The tray is hallmarked on the underside with the lion passant for sterling silver, the leopard's head for the city of London, the date letter A for 1916, and the maker's mark for the Crichton Bros (Lionel Alfred Crichton). There is also a Crichton Bros London & New York stamp. Each of the inkwells is stamped on the underside with the lion passant, the leopard's head, the date letter A, and the maker's mark LAC. Both the little hinged lid and the overall lid that comes off are stamped with the lion passant, the leopard's head, and the LAC maker's mark, on both inkwells. The underside of the sander is is stamped with the lion passant, the leopard's head, and the date letter A, and the interior of the lid is stamped with all three of these marks as well. The interior compartment of the sander is stamped with the lion passant, the leopard's head, the date letter A, and the LAC maker's mark. Every piece is hallmarked and original. This desk set is in excellent overall condition. One of the glass liners has a tiny chip to its rim, but this is not visible without dismantling the inkwell, as the glass is on the interior. Otherwise both glass pieces are in great shape. The silver has no splits, no dents, no monograms, no monogram removals, and no repairs. The tray measures about 12 3/4 by 9 5/8 inches. The height to the top of the inkwell on the tray is about 3 1/2 inches. The total weight for the piece, including the glass liners, is 2272 grams. The silver weight alone, without the glass, is 2156 grams, or 76.0 regular ounces. -jm Powered by SixBit's eCommerce Solution
