A collection of popular essays first published in book form in 1823, with the second volume first issued in 1833. Lamb himself is the Elia of the collection, and his sister Mary is "Cousin Bridget." With the bookplate of William Alfred Westropp Foyle, a British bookseller and businessman who co-founded Foyles bookshop in 1903 with his brother Gilbert Foyle. Previously held in the library of Christopher Foyle, a British philanthropist and chairman of the famous Foyle's Bookshop in London. Bound by Birdsall, Northampton & London. CONDITION Bound in full calf. Externally, smart with light rubbing to the extremities and fading to the spine. The odd small mark to the boards. Internally, firmly bound.
