Description: 1927 $20 ST GAUDENS DOUBLE EAGLE GOLD PCGS GRADED MS65 stunning coin! The beautiful 1927 $20 gold piece was designed by the renowned sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, and struck at the main U.S. Mint in Philadelphia. This large, hefty $20 coin was struck in 90% fine gold, and is from an earlier era in America when precious metal coinage played an important role in American commerce – backing Gold Certificate paper currency. The 1927 $20 gold piece was struck the year that Charles Lindbergh flew solo from New York to Paris. The $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Coin is one of the most highly desired coins in the world. It was designed, along with the $10 Indian Head Coin, by American sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, who was hired by President Theodore Roosevelt to help beautify American coinage. The coin’s obverse features a proud Lady Liberty, in mid-stride bearing a torch and an olive branch. Behind her are the sun’s rays, with the word “LIBERTY” above and the U.S. Capitol building on the coin’s left. The bottom right of the coin displays its date. Encircling this beautiful design are 48 stars representing the states of the union at the time.A majestic eagle flies across the reverse of the coin above the sun, and under the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “TWENTY DOLLARS.” The very first Saint-Gaudens coins featured an incredibly high relief, and were not intended for circulation. The high relief made the coin look more like a medal. Many years later, one of these early samples would be one of the highest value coins ever sold.Graded coins are those assessed by a professional grading service, measuring criteria such as coloration, luster, sharpness of strike, and surface preservation. After grading, coins are meticulously sealed in an acrylic, tamper-proof slab, to preserve and protect them indefinitely. Please call us for more information on coin grades and prices.
