This type or design Twenty Marks note is dated January 22, 1929. “Weimar Germany” officially “The Weimar Republic”, was named after the town of Weimar, where Germany’s new government was formed by a National Assembly after Kaiser Wilhelm II abdicated and the “German Empire” ended. It was the country’s government from 1919 to 1933. The “Rentenmark” was introduced on November 15, 1923 to stop the hyperinflation of 1922 and 1923 in Weimar Germany, after the previously used “Mark” had become almost worthless. The “Rentenmark” was replaced by the “Reichsmark” on August 30, 1924. The “Reichsmark” became the new legal tender, equal in value to the “Rentenmark”. This change was part of the measures taken by the German authorities to stabilize the currency after the hyperinflation period.
