BIBB GRAVES, TO FILL THE SEAT VACATED BY THE APPOINTMENT OF HUGO L. BLACK TO THE SUPREME COURT. 11/13/37 This photograph features Mrs. Dixie Bibb Graves, who served as Alabama's junior senator, returning to her desk at the Capitol in anticipation of the upcoming special session. She was appointed to the Senate by her husband, Governor Bibb Graves, following the elevation of Hugo L. Black to the U.S. Supreme Court. Dixie Bibb Graves was the first woman to represent Alabama in the Senate, marking a significant milestone in the state's political history. === This 7x8.5” original type 1 photograph is from the personal collection of photographer Wes Howland (1906-1956). Howland was a reporter with the Harris-Ewing news service in Washington D.C from 1931-1941, and went on to serve with the military. He was one of a small number of photographers with complete access to the White House, Capitol, Senate, and House. This photo was part of a collection of over 1200 8x10” Wes Howland personal archive images that we acquired from his estate. These original prints are exceptionally rare, if not the only that exist. Not only did Mr Howland have incredible access to the government figures of the day, but he was a highly skilled photographer who produced some stunning historical images and documented Washington D.C. in the 1930s like few others. This photo is a unique piece of history, and we trust you will enjoy it in your collection. We are happy to offer discounts if you order multiple photos.
