Description: 1940’s FRENCH POST IMPRESSIONIST OIL “ ELEGANT FIGURE PROMENADING " A lovely french oil on board which dates to around the late 1940’s and depicts an elegant woman walking through a field or garden. The artist André Gisson is known for landscape, still life, portrait and figure painting. His paintings employ vivid colors swept in small, discernible brushstrokes. André Gisson, named Anders Gittelson at birth, was born into poverty. Living in New York, he took a keen interest in renowned Impressionists such as Monet and was dedicated to becoming a great artist. He legally changed his name to sound more French and endeavored to change his social status. He graduated from the Pratt Institute of Art but, as an American, found it difficult to break into the art market with his Impressionist paintings. He moved to France and legally changed his name to André Gisson. After serving as a Captain in the United States Army during World War II, he continued his travels and art studies throughout Europe and Asia. Gisson created hundreds of paintings throughout his lifetime. His works are in the Smithsonian Institution and the Triton Museum of Art. Among his private collectors were President Lyndon B. Johnson and W. Somerset Maugham.
