The first issue appeared in March 1947, and the last issue was published in March 1982, at which time Southern merged with the Norfolk & Western Railway and "Ties" was discontinued. The magazine was published monthly through 1968; it was issued every two months from 1968 through the last edition. It was considered to be among the finest of the railroad company magazines. All issues contain feature stories about railroad operations, company news, and many photographs; the later issues were printed in color, some with 2-page centerfold color photos.
