Ernst Thälmann (April 16, 1886, Hamburg – August 18, 1944, Buchenwald) was a German politician, Chairman of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Germany (KPD) (1925–1933), and member of the Reichstag (1924–1933). Some facts about Thälmann's political activities: He ran for president twice (1925, 1932). From 1925 until its ban in 1929, he also headed the Union of Red Front Soldiers, which served for the armed protection of the KPD, especially in street battles with political opponents and the police. He reformed the KPD as a party of a new type, as envisaged by the charter of the Communist International. Thälmann's political program was aimed at opposing National Socialism, supporting the peasantry, and creating an anti-fascist front. Thälmann was arrested on March 3, 1933, and shot in August 1944 after more than eleven years of solitary confinement, allegedly on direct orders from Adolf Hitler.
