Description: 1960 Press Photo Artist Rendering US Navy "New" Hydrofoil Patoral Ship PHOTO DESCRIPTION: The back of the photo reads as: Offical U.S. Navy photoFirst mility Hydrofoil ship desgin -- This is the design for the Navy's first military hydrofoil ship, for which a construction contract will be awarded this year. The hydrofoil hsip a high-speed patrol craft is designed to detact and destory modern submarines, which can outrun and outlast many conventional surface ships. Prelimimary inquiry letters have been sent to prospective bidders and invitations to bid on construction of the vessel will be sent to shipbuilders in the neat future. Equipped with homin torpedoes and long-range Sub-marine detection equipment the 115-foot long 110 hydrofoil craft will have retractable fully submerged hydrofoils and will be powered by two 9000 horsepower gas power turbines during foil borne operations. She will carry an auxiliary diesel propulsion system for normal afloat operations. Her hull will be of aluminum. The ship will be will be essentially a "Flying Barracuda" in which weight will be as important as in Aircraft. The hydrofoil craft, will be able to operate at higher speeds and in rougher waters tean conventional craft of comparable size, will carry a crew of one officer and twevle enlisted men.
