Description:   Note: Please study the images carefully to determine the condition of this vintage photograph, as it may not be in perfect condition. It may contain wrinkles, cracks, and possibly even tears due to its age and how it was handled before it got to us. A scanner may interpret colors and contrast differently than human eyes will, so it is possible that the actual photograph may be slightly darker or lighter in person. This vintage photograph is offered for sale as a collectible item and conveys no transfer of copyright. 1960 Press Photo Papyrus Boat At Safi, Morocco - lrx61224 This is an original press photo. A High Price For Wife Safi, Morocco - The man who must keep Thor Heverdahl's papyrus boat together with rope and string bought his third wife this year and is now complaining about the price. She cost about $60 in Egypt, much more than the going rate in Chad, where Abdoulaye Djibrine learned how to make papyrus boats and hitched onto Heyerdahl's expedition that will set out tomorrow to cross the Atlantic. The voyage had been scheduled to begin today but was postponed due to high winds. If he succeeds in reaching Mexico in his boat modeled after a 4,700 year old Egyptian craft, Heyerdahl will consider he has strengthened the argument that the great early civilizations of the Americans learned from the Pharaohs. Djibrine packed pictures of Wives A and B, smiling side by side, into his kit for the reed boat trip. A photo of Wife C, who has less seniority, got a less prominent place. Somehow, Djibrine's careful preparations were reassuring for the rest of the crew. They are men who have sized each other up, but they had not been able to tell much about Djibrine. The other men worried at first as to how Djibrine would react to stress and difficult situations at sea. Knowing a little about his life has made them confident now that he is not only an excellent moulder of papyrus but a man who probably will react to trouble like themselves. Heyerdahl, who became a kind of Scandinavian Odysseus when he floated his Ken-Tiki raft across the Pacific 20 years ago, picked the rest of his crew for their special skill. His navigator is a United States Navy reserve officer, Norman Baker, 40, of New Rochelle, N.Y. Baker, who is in the construction business, impressed Heyerdahl when they met in the Pacific after the American sailed from California to Polynesia in a small boat. Yri Conkevitch, 32, the Ra's Soviet physician and psychologist, was recommended to Heyerdahl, through the Soviet Academy of Sciences. He has a year in the Antarctic behind him and has packed a medicine chest that includes tranquilizers and sedatives. Among very physical men, the crews most striking is Georges Seurial, a 28 year old Egyptian who was heavyweight judo champion in the African Olympic Games. He is a chemical engineer but his life obsession is diving and marine life. His job on the Ra will be catching fish and maintaining the boat's hull. Carlo Mauri is an Italian who has explored from Polynesia to the Arctic. Heyerdahl says he is tough, reliable and a remarkable photographer. Mauri is 39 and has five children. There is also an anthropologist on board, Santiago Genoves, a Mexican with a Cambridge degree who has written books and articles mostly about sex and aggression. He has been a doubter of Heyerdahl's theory that the Egyptians reached the New World and were able to leave some of their thinking there. Photo measures 10 x 6.5 inches. Photo is dated 05-23-1960.   PHOTO FRONT PHOTO BACK Historic Images Part Number: lrx61224 FAQsQ: Can I just download a digital version instead?A: No, we sell only vintage originals and do not make or distribute any copies, including digital ones.
