PSA CardFacts:Leo Joseph Nomellini (June 19, 1924 - October 17, 2000) (DT) had the alter ego of “Leo the Lion” when he wrestled professionally during the NFL off-seasons. Despite not playing in high school, Leo played for the United States Marine Corps team, and then moved on to play for the Golden Gophers. Nomellini starred at the tackle position for the University of Minnesota where he was twice named an All-American. The San Francisco 49ers took Nomellini with their first-ever pick (#11) in the 1950 NFL Draft. San Francisco’s choice of Nomellini proved to be an extremely wise one as he brought speed, strength, passion, agility and versatility to their lineup for 14 seasons (1950-1963). Leo played in 174 consecutive regular season games, and 266 total professional contests, often playing for the full 60 minutes. His size, strength and durability made him one of the most feared tacklers in the NFL and earned him the compliment of being called “indestructible.” He is on a short list of players to be named to the NFL All-Pro First Team on both sides of the ball – on offense in 1951 and 1952, and defense in 1953, 1954, 1957 and 1958. He was also named to ten NFL Pro Bowls. Leo finished his career with 10 points from a punt returned touchdown and two safeties. His off-season wrestling career proved successful as well as he captured three professional tag team championship belts. Leo Nomellini was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1969 and the College Football Hall of Fame in 1977.
