Description: This is the scarce color poster from 1985 to celebrate Rose breaking Cobb’s record in 1985. This means it is now 38 years old!! It is wittingly entitled: “Pete rose to the occasion”. There were 2 types done: (1) black and white; and (2) color. From our understanding the black & white issue was used for the newspapers to print and the scarcer color ones were used as a special, very limited promotional print for magazines. In other words, these were not made for and never received general public distribution. This is one of those “behind the scenes” collectibles. These were obtained from the son of someone who worked in advertising. She happened to have Hertz as one of her accounts. She used her husband’s Topps Pete Rose baseball cards for the photograph. It contains Topps cards from 1963 (showing only the Rose picture of the 4 rookies depicted) to the poster’s production in 1985. Nice depiction and display of the different Rose Topps cards through the years. As part of the promotion in showing Pete’s consistency to breaking the record, it also enumerates the number of cumulative hits Pete has after each season. For example, 173 hits after 1963, and 309 after 1964, continuing to 4,097 hits after 1984 and finally 4,192 with the “Pete rose to the occasion” poster after Pete broke Ty Cobb’s record in 1985. Well done promotional piece – a crossover collectible with Rose (baseball) and Hertz advertising. The poster has “© Hertz System, Inc 1985” in the lower left portion. This poster is mentioned in his day-to-day diary entitled Pete Rose: Countdown to Cobb published in 1985 and detailing Pete’s going after Cobb’s record. In that reference August 22, 1985 is an interesting date. Rose actually writes about this poster on that day. Here are some interesting side facts on this historical poster: (1) In the book Rose mentions how the poster ad will say something along the lines about Rose being #1 in hits and Hertz being #1 in the car rental business. It looks like they changed it from “#1” to each of them being the “all-time leader” on the actual poster which was the way the ad was run. (2) It also appears they made some last-minute changes to the poster to be visually and graphically better from an image and overall visual standpoint. Rose mentions in the book that he thought the pictures of his baseball cards would be at the bottom. Obviously, the pictures of his baseball cards are what make up the main part of the ad. (3) As a side note, Rose said that Hertz paid him less than he usually would have gotten for an advertising campaign like this. However, the perk was a free Hertz rent-a-car whenever he needed one for the rest of his life. The 1st picture in this listing is the poster itself, which is what is being offered. The 2nd picture is for reference only. It is a copy of how the use of the poster appeared in the newspapers congratulating Pete on breaking Ty Cobb’s record. It appeared in newspapers on September 12, 1985. No doubt the promotional poster was made in advance and ready to go to be used by newspapers and magazines as soon as the record was broken.
