Description: These TWO 9.25" luncheon plates are wonderful examples of design from the late 1800s Aesthetic Movement period in Great Britain. Produced in 1885 by Ridgways in Stoke-on-Trent, the pattern is called "Devonshire" and it features a brown transferware design with hand-colored accents of rust, yellow, blue and green. (Most pieces in this pattern are simply brown and white; it is rare to find the polychrome examples.) The plates are showing their age, no chips or cracks, but significant crazing with age darkening. There are a couple of scuffed spots on plate edges, some utensil marks, and one plate has a small ceramic fragment attached to its rim that appears to be original to the manufacturing process. Some of the original bright coloration has faded in the plate centers although the floral rims are still vivid. These plates show their age and are not as well preserved as some other pieces I am listing, but would be so perfect for a shelf or wall arrangement. The movement, which encompassed art, furniture, textiles, ceramics and more, aimed to escape the ugliness and materialism of the Industrial Age, focusing instead on producing "art for art's sake." Among the most well known names related to the movement are William Morris, James McNeill Whistler and Oscar Wilde. The European fascination with all things Japanese was revitalized during this period and those elements are evident in this ceramic pattern: the flat panel, or cartouche; asymmetric placement of design elements; natural depictions such as birds, plants, insects, fish. Note the three panels, or cartouches, central to this design: the cock with rising sun, bird after an insect and unusual fish with shells and coral.)
