Description: 2 NATIVE GOLD QUARTZ SPECIMENS from the MOTHER LODE Ruler is 1/4" wide (6 mm). U.S. 10 cent coin is 17 mm in diameter. Specimen weight (COMBINED): 19.2 Grains (Troy) - 1.24 Gram Sizes: 11 & 12 mm long (each rock) Here's 2 quartz specimens with VG (visible gold) showing. Rocks hail from the Sierra Nevada Mtns. You'll dig the colors interspersed through the host. They show little deformation from having traveled. Iron and gold, having an affinity for one another, often occur together as oxidized iron mixed with the gold. You're not getting your money's worth in gold, but I guarantee two altogether natural specimens of gold and hard quartz. Source is California, U.S.A. You're seeing embryonic gold still attached to the mother rock aka silicon dioxide (quartz). Iron residue and it's residual colors liven this one up. All my specimens show visible gold and are authentic gold nuggets or gold quartz specimens. I poured through old mining dumps for years looking at orange-yellow-rusty rock through a loupe, but I never found a piece with visible gold. Hydrothermal solutions carrying gold and silica crystallized into veins of gold quartz. This specimen comes from one of the many vein systems sourcing the immense placer deposits of the Sierra Nevada Mtns, the famed Mother Lode. In adjoining districts, coarse gold had been recovered in canyon systems to the east, west, and south. The geology of the Dome Rock Mtns. consisted mainly of schist, quartzsite, granite, and rhyolite with numerous contact alteration zones. Farrar Gulch, which yielded the largest nuggets ever found in the region, lay a scant half mile to the west. To the east lay the rich Middle Camp and Mariquita Mining Districts. Large nuggets had been recovered in both placers. Where we stood, the rock formations appeared identical to those in the surrounding districts. Conditions seemed very promising. We were literally surrounded by gold deposits. Quartz outcroppings adorned the mountainsides like painted-white grafitti saying "Gold, dig me!" Boulders of oxidized quartz float and large magnetite nodules lay strewn everywhere. This black iron mineral was especially concentrated in the washes and arroyos. Our soon-to-be unpatented claims looked amazing. I thought to myself, "man, how lucky can a guy be?" You've been in my boots, right? Packing our dry-washer up the main canyon, we made several test runs in scrumptious-looking drop zones. As we began sampling, black sand spilled off the end of our drywasher tray. Finished with test runs, we poured our concentrates into a gold pan. Since the experience is being recalled forty years further up the road, I'm guessing my partner and I looked at one another in quiet resignation, shook our heads disappointedly, and started packing up our gear. The sad truth is, not one solitary pin-prick of gold had found it's way into the riffle tray; nothing but piles of fine-grained magnetite, aka 'black sand'. We figured "what sense is there kicking a dead horse?" Doesn't it often hold true that failures teach the most valuable lessons? How well I know there's only one thing which demonstrates beyond a shadow of a doubt a mining claim contains minable gold. That's 'yeller', not black sand, gleaming in your pan. When someone tells you, "gold is found where there’s lots of black sand", take it with a grain of salt and don't stop your testing until you've found the Real Mccoy. LAW OF THE YUKON "From my ruthless throne, I have ruled alone for a million years and a day; Hugging my mighty treasure, waiting for man to come; Till he swept like a turbid torrent, and after him swept - the scum".
