Original M1905 bayonets were made with a 16" blade during WWI. Strategies changed when the WWII rolled around and military advisors required M1905 bayonets to be shortened to 10". When the war began, M1905 bayonets were cut down to the required 10", but as production ramped up, the M1905E1 (cut-down version) was produced at the required 10" and then designated the M1 bayonet. Interestingly, these were cut down even more to a length of 6.5". These are utility fighting knives but still functional as bayonets. The three scabbards have a canvas belt hoop, but only two have the belt hook hanger. Overall, these bayonets are in Fair - Good condition, considering their age and history. They have been cut-down. The press catches are functional with stiff spring tension. The pommels and guards are securely fastened to the tang. They have scrapes and light oxidation, plus their finishes have been parkerized. The escutcheon screws securely fasten the grip panels on all three. They have light tool marks with strong slots. The serrated grips have chips, scrapes and draglines, plus there is white discoloration on all three. They will probably clean up nicely, but we left it in the condition we received them. The spines, sides and fullers have scrapes, oxidation and discoloration. They have been cut down from their original length. The blades have no nicks or dings and they appear to have their original factory edge. The tips are intact and come to a sharp straight point. The finishes have been parkerized and have turned a gray patina color. There are no visible markings. They were refinished and covered. The plastic scabbards are in Fair - Fair Plus condition. The belt hook hangers are securely attached, rotate freely and are slightly bent out of shape. The canvas frog loops are functional, have no rips or tears and the stitching is sewn tightly. They are all gritty. They are securely attached to the lockets with rivets that have light oxidation. The lockets have scrapes and oxidation. The plastic bodies have scrapes and scratches. Their tips are either missing or cracked. One in particular is missing a lot of the finish. The markings are hard to read on the lockets. Two are faint and marked "USM8A1 / BM Co.", the third one is painted over and not visible. These bayonets and scabbards will be a great addition to your M1 Garand rifle, or a bayonet collection in general. Or they could be used as a display or reenactments.
