Description: Outstanding example of a hand-carved wood Deangle Dan Mask from Liberia. Early 20th Century, with a nice patina overall, and in very good “worn” condition, consistent with its age. One small stable crack around the edge ( see photos). Pierced holes around the circumference, in addition to the pierced nostril holes, indicate that this was intended for actual use, and not just decorative. Typical of Liberian Deangle Dan masks, with slit eyes, protruding lips with teeth showing, oval face and curved/domed forehead. This example also has the characteristic Liberian incised tattoo markings, specifically the vertical division of the forehead, representing the now discontinued practice of the Dan people of Liberia.
