Description: --> Agave Parryi v.parryi Parry’s Agave is native to the grasslands, chaparral, desert scrub, pinyon-juniper and oak woodlands of Central America and northern Mexico, into Arizona and New Mexico, where it typically grows at elevations from 4-8 thousand feet. This drought resistant evergreen perennial succulent showcases a unique geometry of thick gray blue-green leaves with toothy margins and pointed tips, that form into dense symmetrical rosettes that mature over time to ± 2' tall x 3' wide. Agave parryi v. parryi is the true 'Artichoke' agave variant that forms an iconic tight round ball shape. It should not be confused with variants such as v. huachaca or v. truncata. One of several species commonly known as Century Plants A. parryi v. parryi can live for decades. Usually at somewhere between 10-30 years (not the 100 years more poetically suggested by its common name) flowering rosettes bloom only once and then expire after first putting on a magnificent floral show, though not before spawning colonies of multiple offset pups to replace the mother plant and continue the species’ generations. Photos above this text show the actual original genetic material ‘mother’ plants of the specimens for sale: Plants on offer are their identical genetic clones. Photos below this text represent the plants on offer: younger specimens that will grow into the species’ iconic mature full round form. TYPICAL SPECIMEN SIZES. Agave parryi are great landscape plants for desert landscaping. They work well in grouped plantings spaced 1-3 feet apart, and can also be planted as showpieces in containers on a patio. Drought Tolerant Suitable for Xeriscaping While this tough-as-nails species can tolerate almost any soil, Parry's Agave actually does prefer fairly fertile, loamy soil as long as it is well-drained, though it can tolerate sandy or rocky soil too. Being a desert plant, A.parryi requires full sun and is not suited to indoor cultivation. Hardy to roughly -5°F / -21°C, specimens have been known to survive temperatures as low as -20°F / -29°C. A. parryi are vigorous, undemanding plants and tolerant of neglect, with low water requirements, surviving well despite infrequent irrigation. From Spring through Fall water your Agave parryi well whenever the soil becomes dry. Although root rot is possible in overly saturated soils— Agave parryi v.parryi is an extremely tough species that will thrive in any collection. Hardy, forgiving and survivable, vigorous and easy to cultivate, this tough, bulletproof plant can take a lot of neglect and absolutely flourish. Once established, it requires low maintenance and is an ideal plant for sunny, drought-tolerant gardens. FREE SHIPPING!
