The gilt spine titles are a little perished at the bottom ie publisher info, but the top ones are bright and complete. There is a neat former owner name and tiny bookseller label to front endpaper. There is a little toning to endpapers and some light fox spots to a small number of pages. Generally the pages are very clean and bright. The edges are sharp, the cloth is fresh and vivid, and the binding is very solid and sturdy. The protected dustwrapper is in very good condition with light soiling and a couple of small scratch marks to spine. The photographs are the most accurate guide to condition. Context: A collection of five highly-regarded novella-length investigations into the supernatural by fictional psychic detective John Silence. In my opinion, the story 'Ancient Sorceries' is one of ten best tales of supernatural horror in the English language, describing the sinister yet subtly erotic experiences of a loveless academic who unexpectedly finds himself stranded in a forgotten French town, where the residents bear an extremely odd resemblance to cats..... Thoroughly recommended: the BBC audio version of 'Ancient Sorceries' narrated by Philip Madoc, available for free download at the invaluable Internet Archive. Also, you can find a beautifully eerie illustration for 'Ancient Sorceries' in the small format Macmillan 1912 reissue which does not appear anywhere else - which is a pity because it is one of the most striking illustrations to appear in any pre WW1 ghost story collection.
