This is the type of lamp in daily use in ancient Roman homes in Judea in Jerusalem. The Roman empire was in Jerusalem up to third century A.D. This little lamp lit an Ancient Roman era home in Judea, the name then of the Roman province we today speak of as Palestine and Israel. It has decorative scoring throughout the top of the lamp and remnants of a whitish slip. The lamp has a hole for hanging or wall mounting and a small handle to carry the lamp about. The fuel originally used would have been any readily available oil with a wick placed in the aperture. Given the amount of oil this small lamp would have contained the lamp light might have lasted easily through the evening - but the glow would have been muted - though to eyes unaccustomed to the plethora of modern lighting - it would have sufficed for an evening. the lamp is accompanied but a certificate of authenticity from a dealer of antiquities in Jerusalem.
