Peck had three distinct artistic periods: The Vermont period (1820-1827), The New York period (1828-1836) and the Illinois period (after 1836). While in Illinois, Peck found success as a farmer, a community education leader & portraitist; he died in 1868. His painting style evolved while in Illinois. He began consistently using bright colors and painted full-length figures with greater detail than his earlier works. While Peck did not sign his work, sitters with piercing eyes, prominent brows and a locked, serious gaze epitomize his distinctive style. This portrait is no exception. The sitter, an elegant aristocratic woman in her 30's/40's, is beautifully painted on canvas. The lady has a gentle expression and piercing gaze, with big dark blue eyes, pale visage with rosy cheeks, and light brown hair curled and parted in the middle. Her high station in society is displayed in her fine attire, which include a very finely woven translucent white lace bonnet with bow, lace collar with bow, and gold, enamel and seed pearl collar brooch. Her right hand is partially visible at the bottom of the composition and is partly covered by very fine black lace cuff; a simple brass buckle cinches the mutton sleeve black gown at the waist. The sitter is posed on a wooden armchair set against a dark brown ground. The canvas is framed in what appears to be its original carved pine wood frame with fanciful piecrust border. This exquisite painting comes from an old New England estate that contained many pieces of important Americana furniture. The painting will make an outstanding addition to any fine art collection. It will be shipped fully insured with signature upon delivery. Do let us know if you have any questions or require additional photographs. Thank you! CONDITION: The painting presents well and is in good antique, original condition, with wear and patina commensurate with age. The canvas has surface crazing which is evenly distributed and does not affect the beauty of the piece; it has not been inspected out of the frame but does not appear to have any holes or other significant damage. The frame has some wear, scuffing, and a few losses to carved edges. Please review all photos before purchasing. Thank you! DIMENSIONS: canvas 16" tall and 13" wide; with frame 23-3/4" in height, 20-5/8" in width, 2-1/4" frame thickness INVENTORY CODE: CYDA/1/KP/F Payment Please remit promptly, via PayPal. Thank you!
