Description: Antique traditional Chinese Wedding Basket - a 3 Tier banquet sized taffin or babbas carrierThis very large 3 tiered wedding basket is lacquered and decorated. Constructed of pine and bamboo. The tiers are stackable and come apart easily. The top of the handle has a brass metal accent ring where a pole would slide through for easy carrying. There are barely visible remains of some type of scene that was on the top lid, you can still see the shadows of faded painted figures. It appears to be an elderly relative fanning a young woman as she works. The outside of the basket is decorated with food, such as a beet and I want to say aloe, there are insects, a grasshopper/cricket and a butterfly, and many other decorative accents. There is a faint history that emerges from this beautifully crafted container.These baskets are great for a very unique wedding gift that could be filled with personal gifts for the wedding couple, or it makes a great storage basket for crafts, knitting, sewing, or household items. It is by itself a simply wonderful decoration for the home.What this is is a very large Traditionally the basket would have contained food, gifts or dowries for a wedding. They were as well used to bring prayer items and offerings to temples.The basket measures approx. 26 inches tall. The diameter is 18 inches, and each tier is 5 inches deep. I am not certain of its exact age. Limited research has this dated in the 16th to 17th century. Further research is encouraged. I have found exhibitions with carriers similar to this one that state theirs were commonly used during the Baba Nyonya era and that they are specifically the xia na, the "Hokkien" wedding basket. That was from a Singaporean exhibition on taffin carriers and the history associated with their people's. If you research "Baba Nyonya" era you will find the era is "16th - 17th century."
