Description: In 1933 Prohibition ended in the US. President Roosevelt consolidated all the government bodies that had regulated alcohol into the Alcohol Tax Unit of the Bureau of Internal Revenue. Prohibition had allowed organized crime to gain a foothold in the illegal alcohol industry, and crime syndicates continued to operate. It was the job of the Alcohol Tax Unit to seize illegal alcohol plants and bring the alcohol industry into the fold of the economy at large. This post-Prohibition period was the era of agents such as Elliot Ness, who was just 31 years old when in 1934 he assumed the job of Special Agent in Charge of the ATU in the Northern District of Ohio.
