Description: The Stage, or, Recollections of Actors and Acting from an Experience of Fifty Years; a series of Dramatic Sketches, by James E. Murdoch (with an appendix)(Philadelphia: J.M. Stoddart & Co., 1880) Three-quarter leather with marbled paper boards. The spine has five raised bands and title in gilt with line decoration. The leather has worn away a bit around the edges and at the bands. Still a very nice binding. Inside, marbled pastedowns with a lovely bookplate, from the library of William H. Barlett [1850-1918] in Vermejo Park, New Mexico (now owned by Ted Turner). The book is signed by the author on a blank page preceding the title page, and is numbered (77) on verso of title. Rough cut at fore edge and bottom. Attached to a front endpaper is a newspaper article dated January 27, 1877, which concerns a performance at the Boston Theatre of the "Murdoch Testimonial" entertainment. James E. Murdoch was an American actor and elocutionist - worth reading about on Wikipedia. This is a rare book.
