Rare recording of the City of BIRMINGHAM Orchestra under GEORGE WELDON : Overture di Ballo (1870) Background First Performance: Birmingham Festival, 31 August 1870Published: Novello, 1889. The Overture di Ballo, written for the 1870 Birmingham Festival, quickly established itself as one of Sullivan's most popular instrumental works. It is the most recorded of his non-operatic compositions, and the only such work to retain any measure of popularity in the present century. The work is a full-fledged sonata-form overture, but despite its melodic and rhythmic inventiveness, it has a tendency to sound repetitive in the hands of lesser conductors and orchestras, which perhaps explains a cut in the waltz section that was incorporated in Novello's 1889 published version. Nevertheless, it is one of Sullivan's most persistently enjoyable works outside of the operas, as explained by a critic of the time, Henry Lunn, writing in the Musical Times: Mr Sullivan's themes are so melodious and instinct with refined feeling, his instrumentation so graceful and ingenious, and his treatment of the subjects so thoroughly musican-like, that his compositiion appeals as much to the educated as to the uneducated ear. At the premiere, the piece was described as the Overtura di Ballo, Sullivan mistakenly believing that overtura was an Italian word. It was published, however, as the Overture di Ballo, and it is known primarily under that name. Recordings City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra; George Weldon, conductor; 1945. BiographyWeldon was educated at Sherborne School and at the Royal College of Music. He studied conducting with Malcolm Sargent[1] and Aylmer Buesst.[2] In 1943, at 36 years of age, he became the conductor of the City of Birmingham Orchestra in succession to Leslie Heward, where he largely reconstituted the orchestra. Ruth Gipps became the choirmaster of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra Choir in 1948 after the birth of her son, Lance, the previous year. Rumours circulated that the married Gipps was having an affair with Weldon and that Lance was Weldon's son, but these were never confirmed.[3] In 1950 it was suddenly announced that Weldon would be replaced by Rudolf Schwarz. The reasons for this are unclear, but according to Ruth Gipps, Weldon resigned before he could be dismissed.[4] In 1952 he became assistant to John Barbirolli at the Hallé Orchestra and remained in that position until his death. He became well known for his love of sports cars. While in Manchester, he took charge of the Hallé summer seasons of promenade concerts, and many industrial concerts around the north of England. He frequently conducted in London and abroad, made broadcasts and many records.[5] RecordingsWeldon made a series of recordings for EMI, including some in stereo. His recordings of Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake and The Sleeping Beauty with the Philharmonia Orchestra has been reissued on CD on the Seraphim Records and Classics for Pleasure labels. Numerous other recordings by Weldon were also available on CD as of 2008.[6] More Great Records on sale right now: CLICK ON THIS LINK TO SEE MORE GREAT RECORDS CLICK ON THIS LINK TO SEE ALL ITEMS - VINTAGE BOOKS, VICTROLA and TURNTABLE ITEMS, CDs, Books and DVDs http://shop.ebay.com/carsten_sf/m.html ==== A Quick NOTE ON GRADING AND SHIPPING: As you can see from my feedback, I try hard to earn your POSITIVE FEEDBACK and FIVE STAR RATINGS.
