Their top scoring players were David Thompson (25.5), Alex English (23.8), Dan Issel (21.9), and rookie Kiki Vandeweghe (11.5). Unfortunately for the Nuggets they also allowed the most points per game on defense, 122.3 per game. For the 1st 31 games Donnie Walsh was head coach, but he was replaced by Doug Moe. Moe’s coaching encouraged players to shoot the ball before the other team’s defense had time to set up. The Denver Nuggets as we know them today began in 1967 as the Denver Larks in the ABA and before the 1st game they changed their name to the Rockets (named after the long haul trucks of the trucking company owned by the majority owner of the team). Then when the NBA and ABA merged the Denver Rockets had to change their name because an NBA team in Houston already owned the Rockets name. Therefore, the Denver franchise changed the name to the Denver Nuggets to honor the mining heritage of the city and surrounding area. *Fun Fact- The Denver Nuggets were not the 1st team in the NBA to ever be named the Denver Nuggets! In 1949-50 the 1st season after the BAA and NBL merger forming the NBA there was a team named the Denver Nuggets who only lasted 1 season before folding.
