The formation and formation of weightlifting as a sport falls on the period between 1860-1920. During these years, athletic circles and clubs were organized in many countries, various typical apparatus were manufactured and improved, the rules for lifting weights and the conditions for competitions were formed. Weightlifting competitions were part of the program of most of the Olympic Games (except 1900, 1908 and 1912). At the first Olympic Games in Athens (189b), the program included two exercises: lifting the bar with one and two hands. The first Olympic champions were the Englishman L. Elliot, who lifted 71 kg with one hand, and the Danish V. Jensen, who lifted the heaviest barbell with both hands - 111.5 kg. In 1913 the International Weightlifting Congress was held, the result of which was the creation of the World Weightlifting Union. In 1913, the All-Russian Weightlifting Union (VST) was created under the chairmanship of the sports promoter and athlete L. Chaplinsky, in the same year the VST entered the International Amateur Weightlifting Union. The Berlin congress of this union in 1913 made a number of decisions: the name "weightlifting" united three kinds of sports: weight lifting, (barbell and kettlebells), boxing and all types of wrestling. For weightlifters, jerk and jerk with opposite hands, pushing a stone (or weight) of at least 10 kg are included and for teams - tug of war. Athletes were divided into five weight categories: up to 60; 67.5; 75; 82.5 and over 82.5 kg. World records and instructions for weighing the athlete and the barbell were approved when setting a record. The holders of world records and the most prominent athletes of that time were J. Krause, P. Herudzinsky, A. Neuland, L. Chaplinsky, L. Alex, L. Bukharov, K. Pavlenko, G. Chikvaidze, A. Krasovsky, S. Tonkolei, F. Grinenko.
