Rear Admiral Nutwell graduated from the Naval Academy in 1966 with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. After commissioning, he reported to Naval Air Training Command for flight training. After earning his wings, he was assigned to Attack Squadron 215 out of Lemoore, California. Rear Admiral Nutwell then attended Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, earning a Master of Science in Operations Research in 1972. He was then assigned to Attack Squadron 25, again out of Lemoore, California. In 1978, Rear Admiral Nutwell took command of Attack Squadron 105 out of Jacksonville, Florida. He then served as the Executive Officer of the USS Nimitz. Rear Admiral Nutwell commanded both the USS Trenton and the USS George Washington before becoming the Deputy Director for Plans and Policy, European Command. In 1993, Rear Admiral Nutwell was assigned to commander, Carrier Group Three. His final assignment was Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for C3ISR and Space. His decorations include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal and Air Medal.
