Measuring roughly 3 mm by .5 mm wide, this leaf of gold isn't large; still, one has to wonder what possessed the old timers to crush and destroy such natural beauty, but they usually did. Mines producing specimen rock figured it was just higher-than-average grade ore and pulverised it in their stamp mills. Back then, I doubt any such thing as 'specimen value' existed. Everything was milled, the metal concentrated, then melted down. Buyers interested in gold content only could run an assay, weigh it up, and depending on how much ore you had, know exactly how much gold they were buying. Finding collectors of unique gold specimens on the internet wasn't an option back then. My source didn't tell me where this was mined except to say it's from California.
