It highlights Queen’s success, the band’s unparalleled chemistry, and their unforgettable reunion for Live Aid. The performance—voted the greatest live show in rock history in a 2005 poll—features Freddie’s legendary connection with the audience and his unforgettable sustained note during the a cappella section, known as "The Note Heard Round the World." Queen’s 21-minute set, opening with Bohemian Rhapsody and closing with We Are the Champions, cemented their place as one of rock’s greatest acts. "Bohemian Rhapsody" is a 1975 song by Queen, written by Freddie Mercury and released as the lead single from A Night at the Opera. A six-minute epic, it blends a ballad, operatic segments, hard rock, and a reflective coda. Notable for its lack of a chorus, the song parodies opera with references to Scaramouche, Galileo, and Beelzebub, and is considered one of the greatest rock songs of all time. Initially receiving mixed reviews, it has since become Queen's signature song, ranked #17 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. The groundbreaking promotional video helped define the music video format. It topped the UK Singles Chart for nine weeks and remains the UK's third best-selling single, with over six million copies sold globally. In the US, it peaked at #9 in 1976 and reached #2 after appearing in Wayne’s World (1992). Inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2004, the song was certified Diamond in 2021 and became the most-streamed song from the 20th century. In 2022, it was added to the National Recording Registry for its cultural significance. The famous "Mama, just killed a man" lyric was part of this early draft. In 1975, Mercury presented the song's opening ballad to producer Roy Thomas Baker, revealing his vision for the operatic section. Guitarist Brian May described the song as an original and intriguing idea, noting that much of it was already in Freddie's mind before the band began working on it. Queen rehearsed the song in mid-1975 and began recording in August at Rockfield Studio, using multiple studios for different sections. The song’s complex structure required over 180 overdubs, with Mercury’s precise vocals creating natural phasing effects. Due to limited 24-track analogue tape, the band had to "bounce" tracks down to successive sub-mixes, often reusing the same tape multiple times. May’s guitar solo was recorded on one track to create a counter-melody to the main theme, while producer Baker used automation to make the song’s transition from clean ballad to distorted opera section. An early draft of the song, unearthed in 2023, revealed that Mercury originally considered calling it "Mongolian Rhapsody" before changing it to "Bohemian."
