Description: Callisia fragrans AKA Octopus Plant, False Bromeliad or Basket Plant.Also called Family Doctor, Medicine Plant, House Ginsing and a few other names. Grown in grown in Florida outdoors in ground most often but makes nice potted, even more so hanging basket plant. Callisia fragrans is a great tropical / subtropical plant for beginners. Plant has elongated leaves that in shade are bright green and with more light get purple hue and steaks and even more purple when grown with lots of direct sunlight. Easily transfers from being outdoors during summer to being brought inside for winter. Pairing the look of a bromeliad with a draping stem sprawling is visually stunning in hanging basket. The height is generally 6 to 12 inches as stem will then lay down or hang over pot / basket. Easily transfers from being outdoors during summer to being brought inside for winter. Often used as select grown cover for special spot in Florida landscape. But that is not all to like as plant get small whitish clusters of very fragrant flowers on long branched stems. These branched stems contain large numbers of blossoms and are arranged into smaller tight clusters. Blossoms occur mostly during end of winter and spring but will appear in groups. Plant will bloom and it will appear it has finished flowering. Do not cut stem as it will have another group of flowers apear. As long as stem is green it may produce more flowers.More yet to like. From mature thick stem plant puts out runners of 1 to 2 feet that will form new plants, see in photos. If potted or in hanging basket these runners hang and develop plants at end similar to Spider Plants. If in the ground these runners will spread out and new plants will add to ground cover. If plant is in pot or hanging basket these runners enhance look forming interesting hanging like vine with new plant growing from end. Several of these runners may develop thus Octopus plant name. Lastly, an easy care and easy to make more plants by just cutting along stem as roots easily develop on cutting. First photo is grouping of plants, next two show running with new plant developing. Plants are prepared for shipping which includes for most a day of hydrating followed by a day to allow plants to dry. Plants like Tillandsia and Vanda orchids need to be completely dry prior to boxing. Shipping damp in a warm dark place increases chance for fungus to develop. Recommend you always do preventative treatment on any plant shipped and then water thoroughly to rehydrate.
