Celebrate Australia! The Greater Blue Mountains & the "Living Fossil" The Greater Blue Mountains Area consists of over 1 million hectares of sandstone plateaus, escarpments and gorges dominated by temperate eucalypt forest. It was selected as an UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. The site is noted for its representation of the evolutionary adaptation and diversification of the eucalypts in post-Gondwana isolation on the Australian continent. Ninety-one eucalypt taxa occur within the Greater Blue Mountains Area. The site provides significant representation of Australia's biodiversity, with ten percent of the vascular flora as well as significant numbers of rare or threatened species, including endemic and evolutionary relict species, such as the Wollemi pine, which have persisted in highly-restricted microsites. The Australian species Wollemia nobilis (the Wollemi pine) is the sole species in the genus Wollemia. It was discovered by accident in 1994 in a remote series of narrow, steep-sided sandstone gorges near Lithgow in temperate rain forest wilderness area of the Wollemi National Park in New South Wales, 150 kilometers northwest of Sydney. The last known fossils of the genus date from approximately 2 million years ago. The Wollemi pine is thus described as a living fossil, or, alternatively, a Lazarus taxon. Fewer than a hundred trees are known to be growing wild, in three localities not far apart. Genetic testing has revealed that all the specimens are genetically indistinguishable, suggesting that the species has been through a genetic bottleneck in which its population became so low (possibly just one or two individuals) that all genetic variability was lost. The Wollemi pine is one of the world's rarest species. The Three Sisters The Three Sisters are a famous rock formation in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales, Australia. They are close to the town of Katoomba and are one of the Blue Mountains' most famous sights, towering above the Jamison Valley. Their names are Meehni, Wimlah, and Gunnedoo. The Sisters were formed by erosion. The soft sandstone of the Blue Mountains is easily eroded over time by wind, rain and rivers, and the cliffs surrounding the Jamison Valley are being slowly broken up. Formations like the Three Sisters are created when water seeps into small cracks in the rock, gradually enlarging them over time to form large indentations. Eventually, the Sisters will be eroded away completely. The commonly told of the very legend of the Three Sisters is that three sisters fell in love with three men from a neighboring tribe, but marriage was forbidden by tribal law. Battle ensued, and the sisters were turned to stone by an elder to protect them, but he was killed in the fighting and no one else could turn them back. This story is said to be an Indigenous Australian (Aboriginal) Dreamtime legend. The coin’s obverse depicts a full-color image the Three Sisters rock formation as seen from Echo Point. The design includes a Blue Mountain Tree Frog, an arboreal inhabitant that frequents the regions rocky rivers and streams.
