Description: Shown here are three Civil War bullets dug in 1974 near Falling Waters Md. off route 81 and 11 on private property with the owner's permission. This area was heavily fought over during Lee's retreat from Gettysburg. Union Calvary skirmished with Confederates during Lee's crossing of the Potomac into Virginia in July 1863 after the battle of Gettysburg. The bullets found in the Potomac river and bank are a .69 Cal. RM Southern manufactured side cast (see pics: from Thomas & Thomas Bullets and Cartridges #189 A), a .58 Cal. Southern manufactured cone cavity (see pics: from Thomas & Thomas Bullets and Cartridges #172 A) and a .44 Cal. revolver bullet possibly a Watervliet Arsenal made. These probably were dropped by Confederate troops during the river crossing. Bullets are in excellent condition for being in the water for over 100 years.
