Description: DESCRIPTION: We grow over 1000 different crinum, including about 350 or our own hybrids, and Stars & Stripes ranks right up there in our top 10 favorites in color, form, and growing habits. It is certainly one of the finest red striped hybrids on the market today. The only other nursery we know of that sells this bulb states this is one of the best crinum they have ever grown. Our largest bulbs are about 3 1/2" in diameter. Flower scapes will get 36" tall and mature bulbs usually have 8 blooms about 6 1/2" wide. One especially nice feature is that these tall scapes do not flop over like many crinum. Ours have bloomed as early as May and as late as December. These offset moderately about 4 per year once they reach a near blooming size and, if left alone for several years, will make an imposing clump. A small clump of several of these bulbs will become a treasure for decades to come. BACKGROUND: This is a cross of C. scabrum and C. erubescens done in 1977 by Thad Howard. Bulbs from this cross have a "grex" name of digweedii. The original cross produced at least 3 seeds (as you know seeds are all genetically different). We know there are 3 different seedling clones in circulation with slight differences. This particular variation is the best bloomer and offsetter. It will not form seeds, but the pollen is somewhat fertile when used on other seed producing crinum. As you can see, it keeps the dark red stripe from it's parent, scabrum. GROWING CONDITIONS: When you plant these space them at least 12-18" apart if that will be their permanent location. Small plants can be planted much closer together, if you intend to move them to a permanent spot after about 3 years before they get too large. Like most crinum they tolerate a wide range of soils, but prefer rich soil with good drainage. We think this should do fine outside in zone 7 (planted deeper, or with some mulch, in zone 7) or higher without any special care. Although it is somewhat cold hardy, the leaves tend to be tender and almost freeze completely back even here in zone 9 where temperatures rarely dip below the 20s. The leaves come back nicely in April and May, just before they start blooming in mid-summer. They bloom freely until frost kills the leaves. DESCRIPTION OF ITEM FOR BID: You are bidding on a small-size bulb that is at least 1 year old and about 1/2" in diameter which should bloom within 3 years. Bulbs will be freshly dug, shipped bare root and with leaves March-November. In the winter months the leaves may be absent. WE SIZE OUR BULBS APPROXIMATELY BY AGE AS FOLLOWS: A few varieties can take 6 years or more to bloom.
