The Virus tour ID is a three-buckle boot that offers performance closest to its four-buckle alpine boot cousins. At 3312 grams (for a size 26 pair) this isn't the lightest boot on the market, but it easily rivals those of the big backcountry brands. If you are seriously concerned about weight, you may want to look into the VIRUS Lite ID which weighs 98 grams less per pair thanks to the use of Pebax plastic which is 20% lighter. The main features of the Dalbello Virus tour ID are the 2-piece BioStride tongue, the Cabrio design and the Dynalink retention system. I know this all sounds like a bunch of marketing talk, so let's see what's behind each of these. BioStride language: The Virus tour ID's tongue has essentially been split in two and is held together by a rather simple locking mechanism. Why would Dalbello do this? Adds an extra pivot point to the cuff resulting in a larger motion for walking or skinning. Think of it as a second pivot point on the tongue just below the top buckle. This allows for more rearward movement of the upper cuff. "Posterior movement" I hear you say? Yes, it doesn't do anything to improve the forward flex you need most while riding steep inclines, but it does give you more rearward flex on the flats. So there's some benefit here, but it would be nice to be able to reverse engineer this to go the other way. The big advantage of the BioStride tongue is that you can increase the flex of the boot while still being fully laced. Carbon design: Central to Dalbello boot designs over the last decade has been the three-piece Cabrio Design architecture, which incorporates separate structural elements for the lower shell, upper cuff and outer shell tongue. This configuration allows for easy on and off compared to the shell design, while still ensuring the foot is in relative comfort. It might not have the greatest range of motion on the market, but it allows for a lot of flexibility and has the ability to hold your foot really securely. dynamic link: The central buckle of the Dalbello Virus tour ID crosses the arch of the foot effectively securing the foot towards the rear of the ski boot where it can be held securely and limit upward movement of the heel. When the Virus ID flexes, the Dynalink band does not allow the foot to slide forward or the heel to lift within the liner or shell. The Dynalink system (as they call it) also prevents the lower shell from warping or ballooning with forward flex. Call it what you will, this position is ideal for a central boot buckle as it secures the foot and allows for effective energy transfer from skier to boot to ski. Two other features worth talking about are the Dalbello Virus tour ID and Liner buckles. The reason the buckles are unique is that there are delrin plastic clips integrated into the buckle ladder assembly that allow the buckles to be opened without fully disengaging them. This gives your feet more room to move while walking, skiing, or just taking a break during your break. All the buckles have been designed to be 'inboard' meaning they are less likely to snag when you're at the top of the peak in the rocks (a pet peeve of mine). The Dalbello Virus tour IDliners are called "Trufits", which are designed to fit right out of the box like mine - however they can also be heat molded for a better custom fit. The liners offer great support as they are quite ruched and are cut nice and tall with a lace up system. They are made with a combination of Ultralon® HD + Enact™ with high density elastic foam resin. They have a multi-laminate forefoot and toe and incorporate 'EZ Walk/Flex Design & Construction' which is essentially a flex fabric strategically placed to aid flexibility.
